Ahhh...so Christmas shopping time is here! Ahhhh....great! Another year with no money and three kids to buy presents for. The little ones are pretty easy! Pretty much anything you can wrap up and put under the tree is good enough for them. Especially the little one because I'm sure all she'll do is eat and play with the paper! But my oldest really really really wants a Nintendo DS. Do you know how much those things cost??? Give me a friggin break! They're $130 plus each game is $30 each! That's the only thing she asked for! I usually only allow myself $100 per child and that includes their "Santa" gifts! Ahh what to do, what to do?!
My hubs and I went to Wal-Mart the other day so that the little ones could look around and play with toys and that gives us an idea on what they want and what will hold their attention. Pretty easy! I think we'll get my son a little toy register and a Leap Frog game, as his big gifts. The little one loves all stuffed animals, especially elephants so she's going to be a piece of cake to buy for! But when we looked at the DSs my jaw hit the floor! I really don't know what to do. No, she really doesn't need it and it's not educational but since we don't have a lot of money our kids never really get anything they want except for at Christmas and birthdays. The only other thing she wants is a hamster and her brother is allergic so I don't think that's going to be possible. We already told her that if she gets that from Santa that will more than likely be her only gift seeing as how Santa only makes so much for each child and there would be rules involved with that kind of gift. We don't let our kids play video games unless they're educational ones like Leap Frog, so the game playing time would be limited and only allowed after homework was done and only as long as her grades didn't suffer or get bad and her attitude was under control. I was kinda expecting her to say forget it. But she said that was fine! Go figure!
Not having a lot of money sucks sometimes but then I think about how my kids are not spoiled at all and each and every thing they get is so appreciated and loved. I've seen kids that have and get everything they want and they appreciate nothing and only ask for and expect more and more. So it does teach them responsibility and gratefulness. But sometimes I feel bad that my kids don't get to have all the fun things that their friends get.
So what do I do? Do I spend the extra money to make her feel special and give her the only thing she wants? Or do I forget about it and get her other stuff? I'm so stuck on what to do. Any advice?

You do have quite a dilemma. It sounds like you have some pretty great kids that know how to appreciate things. So if it is just too much of a stretch for Christmas I would go with smaller presents for her that are in your budget. There's always next year to get her a DS if she still really wants it. Good luck making a decision. I wish I had better advice for you.
Money is so tight, EVERYWHERE. The echonomy stinks! You might consider looking on ebay for a DS. You could find one at a decent price especially since it's not shopping season according to the rest of the world until the day after Thanksgiving. However the longer you wait, the more you'll have to pay, on ebay anyways. Since you allow them to only play educational games, how bout a WII...They aren't nessessarily educational rather than recreational since it makes the person playing use their body so they don't completely fry their brain cells and they strenghten their bodies instead.
Those are great ideas! Thanks! I will definately think about the WII, although I think they're pricey too! Thanks again! :)
This is the first year in a long time it has been this tight for us, no extra money ! I am having a hard time also. I would say check E-bay or also they have places in our mall I think it is called Game Trader (or something Like that) That sells 2nd hand DS's and games. That is where my boys get their games.
