Just one reason why...

Here is just one reason why I will never have a gun in my house! Yes, it wasn't too bad but it could have been far worse! I don't care if you have your gun locked up in a vault, locked in a steel box inside a concrete wall, with bricks guarding it and a home security alarm on it with your bullets on a far away beach somewhere, locked up in a submarine with sharks guarding it! If your kids have any interest in finding it and taking it out for a look and/or show off then they will. Ok well maybe I'm exaggerating a tad....maybe. Buuuttt...I will never have one in my house. It's to me, just not worth the risk of my kids finding it.

My dad had one when I was little and I accidentally found it one day while I was snooping, er...looking, through their closet. I didn't touch it but that's only because I've been terrified of guns my whole life. But I could have...and they weren't even home at the time; hence me snooping, err...shopping....errrrr....looking, in their closet. If I had been somewhat curious I could have taken it down to look at it and possibly hurt myself. But I seriously doubt, looking back now, that it was loaded; my dad would never have left it loaded. But still...

What do you think? Do you own one? Where do you hide it from your kids? Do you ever worry about them finding it?

We definitely don't own one, and I don't allow violent toys either. There are just way too many horror stories.

But, since my parents own guns (for hunting), my son has been taught gun safety since he was 2. Teaching things the proper way has taken away any curiosity, so we don't have to be afraid of him being in their house with them.

We have several guns in our home, but that's because my husband is a police officer.

At first, it did bother me quite bit, but after getting a lot of good advice from other police families we learned that you have to make a gun less interesting for a child. Every few months or so my husband brings out his gun to show our son. He's been doing this since he first showed interest as a toddler. We all sit at the table and disassemble the gun, showing him all of the parts, what everything does, and yes, have even showed him images of exactly the kind of damage a gun does. We don't want our kids to be fearful of weapons, but to respect them. And so far so good.

We've even tested our son on occasion by leaving the gun unloaded on our bed to see what he'd do. Every single time he saw it, instead of picking it up, he immediately came to my husband to tell him the gun was out.

Teaching our kids about gun safety will always be ongoing and while we'll never truly trust them around guns, like I said, it helps to satisfy their curiosity.

Well Cat, it sounds like you're being very smart about it. Kudos to you for that. And I'm glad to hear that he tells you and/or hubs when he sees it out instead of letting curiosity get the best of him.

I don't know why I have a huge fear of guns...I just do. That will more than likely never change. If my kids decide when they're older that they want to learn how to use one then I'm all for it but I just won't have them (the guns...not the kids! lol) in my house. That's just me though! Thanks for commenting! :)
